About Elements Martial Arts
Elements Martial Arts is a Chattanooga based Wado karate academy founded by Ryan and Chelsie Guillemet. Wado is based on two Japanese characters: Wa is peace, harmony, and unity, and Do is way or style, giving us the Way of Peace and Harmony. Thus, Elements Martial Arts endeavors to bring harmony to the body, mind, and spirit.

A body in harmony is strong, agile, and in well-nourished for efficient energy use. A mind in harmony is aware, open, and free of emotional stress. A spirit in harmony is intuitive and calmly responsive.

Training Strategy and Curriculum
Elements combines martial training and defensive strategy with yoga practice to develop breathing and stretching habits that can clear the mind, detoxify the body, and relieve stress and injury. Karate training equips each student with total awareness (zanshin) of themselves, their world, and how to respond to their environment with mindfulness and agility.

The nature of martial arts provides a three-tier curriculum:
  • Self Defense and Personal Awareness
  • Physical Fitness and Nutrition
  • Character Development
Realizing the potential of mind-body-spirit connections allows students to recognize and develop habits, abilities, and wellness that can better their lives and their world for generations to come. The Elements dojo provides a positive, uplifiting, and safe educational environment. Each class is a stepping stone to an improved self, family, and community.

Elements offers two paths of practice:
Traditional Martial Arts
Martial Fusion

In the spirit of harmony, Elements teaches their students to exercise control and defend themselves using their skills of perception, redirection, and avoidance before resorting to combat. We don’t set out to master each other, but ourselves.

We give students and their families the most professional, well-supervised, and highest quality instruction available in any fitness activity, sport, or art. The dojo community gives students the ability to experience personal and collective achievement within their training. The classroom represents life on a smaller scale where every student can try, fail, and overcome, building the confidence to handle themselves in any situation.
Elements was born of a desire to teach a practical philosophy of what works to those who want to grow and enhance their way of life. Martial arts cultivate strong decision-making skills, along with qualities that solid decisions require: patience, resourcefulness, confidence, respect, openmindedness, humility, self honesty, authenticity, mindfulness, and common sense. These qualities provide the most difficult, but most necessary attributes we can attain for life.

Student-Teacher Relationship
As a student of martial arts, you discover that every situation deals with self-defense. Hironori Otsuka once instructed, “The best defense is a good offense” which entails awareness of your environment and reactions. Physical abilities like flexibility, strength, balance, and agility should undoubtedly present themselves with karate practice, but authentic growth in emotional control, mental awareness, and spiritual intuition depend on the attitude of the student.

Every person has different needs and desires for their training. The collective knowledge, skill, and collaboration of your instructors will build lifelong benefits according to your personal journey. Ryan and Chelsie Guillemet create a dynamic learning experience in each class, offering both male and female perspectives on physical training, mental and emotional growth, and the lifelong practice of martial arts.
The bond between teacher and student is something the Guillemets share and deeply understand. Both Guillemet-sensei personally teach each class, provide age appropriate explanations, modifications, and provide the example of classroom conduct and teamwork.

The Metaphor of Elements
The Four Elements serve as natural metaphor for the areas of life: Earth (life values and roots), Air (freedom and openness), Water (emotions, habits, and reactions), and Fire (will, energy). Martial Arts embraces this metaphor as it applies to movement, action, and living the Way of Harmony.
